Nobody needs to tell you that walking through the desert is just asking for trouble, big trouble. But if you will be doing it with an experienced guide who knows the route through the shifty sands, it can be an adventure not to be forgotten. If you have a day to spare on your Moroccan adventure, plan to have a guided walk to the desert.
Before the end of the day, you will get to a camp just on the foot of Erg Chebbi desert whereby after setting up camp, you can go up the dune for a spectacular sunset. Spend the night cozied up in a desert tent. In the morning, you will head back up the dune for the sunrise, an experience on its own, while having breakfast. After some time of taking pictures and enjoying the overall experience, you will walk back to the departing point
1- A short camel ride1 ~ 2 hours for sunset or sunrise at Erg Chebbi with a night either at one of the hotels (Erg Chebbi hotels offer en-suite rooms with A/C & a swimming pool) at the dune line or nomad tented camp, luxury camps are available on request.
2- Erg Chebbi camel treks with overnight in a nomad tents under the stars, the Sahara desert camps are located inside the Erg Chebbi dunes, a camel ride of 1h30 ~ 2 hours is necessary to get there. This option starts at the sunset in front of the hotel at the dune line and ends after you assist to a sunrise followed by breakfast and camel trek back to the hotel for a shower.
3- Extended Morocco Camel Treks options that include camel tours of 2, 3 and 4 days with a local desert guide and camels for sure. This will allow meeting the real nomads who live in the desert practicing activities such as pasturing herds of goats and camels…etc, you may share a cup of tea or a meal with one of this families.
Erg Chebbi dunes is always a flurry of activity being one of the main attractions in Merzouga. One such activity is the opportunity to sand board down the side of this dune. This thrilling activity has become a must-do for many people visiting Erg Chebbi. It is fun for both first timers and those that are acquainted with snowboarding and skiing.
You will be required to walk up the precipitous dune to reach the top, an arduous endeavour on its own. But the thrill you will get as you whiz down the dune makes up for all the sweat you broke climbing up. It is an unforgettable experience which has seen a few people going up two to three times to relive the experience.
